The Editor

Dr Valery Feigin, MD, MSc, PhD, FAAN is Professor of Neurology and Epidemiology and Director of the National Institute for Stroke & Applied Neurosciences of AUT University, Auckland, New Zealand. He is internationally renowned expert in stroke who has authored over 300 scientific publications in stroke, including several stroke and neurology-related handbooks and book chapters for physicians. One of his most recent books ("When Lightning Strikes - An Illustrated Guide to Stroke Prevention and Recovery" HarperCollins Publishers) was published in New Zealand in 2004 (e-format published in 2011) and served as a basis for the development of the DVD-based role model (observational learning) educational products available via our website. He graduated in medicine from the Novosibirsk Medical University, Russia, and undertook advanced training in neurology and clinical epidemiology in Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA and Erasmus University, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Valery is also Editor-in-Chief of Neuroepidemiology (international journal with the impact factor of 2.482). He is also a member of editorial boards of eight international medical journals (World Journal of Neurology, European Journal of Neurology, Journal of Geriatric Cardiology, Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation, Stroke Research and Treatment, Acta Clinica Croatica, Updates in Neurology and World Journal of Methodology) and a peer reviewer for a number of journals, including Lancet, Lancet Neurology, Stroke, American Journal of Epidemiology, European Journal of Neurology, Age and Aging etc.   

Professor Feigin is a member of several national and international professional medical associations, including World Stroke Organization and New Zealand Association of Neurologists. He was a founding chair of the Scientific Panel of Neuroepidemiology of the European Federation of Neurological Societies. He currently leads the Stroke Experts Panel of the Global Burden of Disease Project that contributes data to the WHO regular reports distributed all over the world. He is Chair of the New Zealand National Conference on Stroke and Applied Neurosciences to be held in Auckland in 16-18 November 2011 and also a Chair of the 2^nd International Congress on Neurology and Epidemiology to be held in Nice, France in 8-10 November 2012.
